A Visit with Michaela MacColl

Earlier this week, Connecticut author, Michaela MacColl visited the Booth & Dimock Memorial Library as part of the Connecticut Authors Trail. Her current books are Prisoners in the Palace the story of a servant girl working for a young Queen Victoria, Nobody's Secret about young Emily Dickinson as a detective and Promise the Night about Beryl Markham's amazing childhood in Africa before she came one of the first and best female aviators. All three books are available at the Library and well worth a read!

Ms. MacColl spoke about her experience finding an agent and publishing her first book--Prisoners in the Palace as well as the importance of research when writing historical fiction. It certainly made me want to know more about all three main characters.

Nobody's Secret marked the first of a theme for the author. Her next book will be another detective story featuring the Bronte Sisters and more literary persons are to follow.

Here are a few images of her from her presentation:

Student Review - Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

Recently, I have read Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. It was a very unique novel of a freshman who doesn't have many friends and happened to be cast into a group of seniors who change his life forever. He goes by the name of Charlie and, right off the bat, there is question due to how he speaks of his aunt Helen. Other than that, it tells an experience of drugs, laughter, drama, and of course The Rocky Horror Picture Show. What I liked best of this novel is that it is written in the form of a journal. Why I had enjoyed this so much is because you get Charles's perspective on his life. For me, it was like looking through his eyes as I read it. As a rating of one through five, I give it a solid four and I strongly recommend you to read Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky.

Teens Top Ten

It’s time for the Teens Top Ten!
Teens can vote from August 15th through September 15th!

Teens Top Ten is all about teen choice! Teen readers between the ages of 12 and 18 can vote online at www.ala.org/yalsa/reads4teens for their favorites from this year’s list of nominated titles. The resulting Teens Top Ten will be announced during Teen Read Week, the third week in October. At ala.org/teenstopten you can find an annotated list and a book trailer of the nominees as well as tips for promoting the Teens Top Ten to teen readers. Also check out the fantastic tumblr at yalsa-ttt.tumblr.com. Please help us get the word out and use  #TTT13 on Twitter and Tumblr when promoting Teens Top Ten!

The Teens Top Ten is part of an ongoing project that connects teen book groups with publishers of young adult books. The publishers provide advance reader copies to selected teen book groups and the teens evaluate the books and provide feedback to the publishers. These same teen book groups create the voting list for Teens Top Ten by nominating their favorite titles published in the previous year.

More information, including a list of these fabulous Teens Top Ten book groups, may be found at ala.org/teenstopten
