Visit the Moon

Have you heard of 172 Hours on the Moon? It is a new book by John Harstad (translated by Tara F. Chance) about what happens when 3 teenagers win a contest to spend 172 hours on the moon to re-invigrate interest in space travel.

Here is a synopisis from Goodreads:

It's been decades since anyone set foot on the moon. Now three ordinary teenagers, the winners of NASA's unprecedented, worldwide lottery, are about to become the first young people in space--and change their lives forever.

Mia, from Norway, hopes this will be her punk band's ticket to fame and fortune.
Midori believes it's her way out of her restrained life in Japan.
Antoine, from France, just wants to get as far away from his ex-girlfriend as possible.

It's the opportunity of a lifetime, but little do the teenagers know that something sinister is waiting for them on the desolate surface of the moon. And in the black vacuum of space... no one is coming to save them.

In this chilling adventure set in the most brutal landscape known to man, highly acclaimed Norwegian novelist Johan Harstad creates a vivid and frightening world of possibilities we can only hope never come true.

Add this book to your reserve list at the Booth & Dimock Memorial Library

And, if you want to learn more about the Apollo 11 mission to the moon, We Choose the Moon is a great project from the John F. Kennedy Library complete with photographs and more to experience history.

Beat the Heat...In Antarctica!

Were you a fan of Shackleton's Stowaway?
Its available at the Booth & Dimock Memorial Library!

Synopsis from Goodreads:
On October 26, 1914, Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance set sail from Buenos Aires in pursuit of the last unclaimed prize in exploration: the crossing of the Antarctic continent. The crew stood on deck to watch the city fade away. All but one.

Eighteen-year-old Perce Blackborow hid below in a locker. But the thrill of stowing away with the legendary explorer would soon turn to fear. Within months, the Endurance, trapped and crushed by ice, sank. And even Perce, the youngest member of the stranded crew, knew there was no hope of rescue. If the men were to survive in the most hostile place on earth, they would have to do it on their own.

Now, thanks to Google Maps, you can explore Antarctica and Shackleton's Hut!

Weekly Raffle

Part of the OWN THE NIGHT Summer Reading Program is the weekly raffle. Drop by the Teen Zone desk to enter each time you visit the library.

This week you can pick from two prizes : A You are Here Solar System T-Shirt or two signed ARCs (advanced reader's copies) of books by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn. Both come with $4 in Fine Funs and an Own the Night bag.  Read on for descriptions of the two books.

Every morning, A wakes in a different person’s body, a different person’s life. There’s never any warning about where it will be or who it will be. A has made peace with that, even established guidelines by which to live: Never get too attached. Avoid being noticed. Do not interfere.

It’s all fine until the morning that A wakes up in the body of Justin and meets Justin’s girlfriend, Rhiannon. From that moment, the rules by which A has been living no longer apply. Because finally A has found someone he wants to be with—day in, day out, day after day.

With his new novel, David Levithan has pushed himself to new creative heights. He has written a captivating story that will fascinate readers as they begin to comprehend the complexities of life and love in A’s world, as A and Rhiannon seek to discover if you can truly love someone who is destined to change every day.

Elysia is a clone, created in a laboratory, born as a sixteen year old girl, an empty vessel with no life experience to draw from. She is a Beta, an experimental model of teenaged clone. She was replicated from another teenage girl, who had to die in order for Elysia to be created.

Elysia's purpose is to serve the inhabitants of Demesne, an island paradise for the wealthiest people on earth. Everything about Demesne is bioengineered for perfection. Even the air there induces a strange, euphoric high that only the island's workers—soulless clones like Elysia—are immune to.

At first, Elysia's new life on this island paradise is idyllic and pampered. But she soon sees that Demesne's human residents, the most privileged people in the world who should want for nothing, yearn. And, she comes to realize that beneath its flawless exterior, there is an undercurrent of discontent amongst Demesne's worker clones. She knows she is soulless and cannot feel and should not care—so why are overpowering sensations clouding Elysia's mind?

If anyone discovers that Elysia isn't the unfeeling clone she must pretend to be, she will suffer a fate too terrible to imagine. When Elysia's one chance at happiness is ripped away from her with breathtaking cruelty, emotions she's always had but never understood are unleashed. As rage, terror, and desire threaten to overwhelm her, Elysia must find the will to survive.

Own the Night: Week 2

We had so much fun last week in the Teen Zone celebrating the first week of the OWN THE NIGHT Summer Reading. And we have some great things in store for week 2!

Here are Evan and Clair with Teen Librarian Kristi, hard at work on last week's Library Challenge--BINGO.

This week's challenge is Undead Mad Libs!

Also last week we had a great time at Ninja Olympics where Coventry's Ninjas in training were tested on Stealth, Composure, Agility, Patience, Accuracy and Endurance. The hardest were Patience (building a house of cards) and folding Ninja Stars for the Accuracy test. Here is the Laser Obstacle Course for the Agility test. It was fun to set up, solve and of course destroy!

Check the blog each week for our THIS WEEK AT THE LIBRARY feature listing the events, and be sure to drop by the Teen Zone desk to visit the Teen Librarians, register for the OWN THE NIGHT Summer Reading Program, enter the weekly raffle, talk to us about Coventry Teen Read and of course play Undead Mad Libs!
