Teen Book Review - To Kill a Mockingbird

To Kill a Mockingbird is a story based on a court case between an African American man and a caucasian woman. The man is accused of a terrible crime and a brace citizen decides to help him and do the right thing. That citizens name is Atticus. Along his journey to help this man, he teaches his children, Jem and Scout, valuable lessons. Jem and Scout learn about standing up for what you believe in, and not to listen to what others think about you. This book truly teachers a lot of life lessons.

I rated this book a 3 (out of 5) because I wasn't very intrigued until the end of the book. I felt that in the beginning it wasn't very captivating for a young reader. There wasn't much action until the actual court case. I also felt like the court case was dragged on too long. Overall, I learned a lot from the book, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have wished for.

Teen Book Review - Boy 21

Finley, the main character, loves nothing more in life than basketball and his girlfriend, Erin. When the new rising star, Russ, arrives, he is told to become friends with him to help him fit in. Russ is a nationally ranked and recruited high school basketball player. Finely finds himself torn between letting Russ have his starting position, and playing himself.
I liked this book. Once I started reading, I wanted to read more. Each page needed me to read the next one. Other than that, the book had a strong plot and some nicely executed twists. They only bad thing I could think to say is that he keeps the readers unaware of the biggest problem until the end.

Teen Book Review - Openly Straight

In the book Openly Straight, Bill Koenigsberg writes about a young teen that comes out in the 8^th grade and is now a junior in high school. He wants to be, “a part of the guys.” To do so, he goes to a prep school on the other side of the country to be “openly straight.” Unfortunately, he ran away from one label just to fit right into another, the jocks. Overall, Openly Straight aims high and succeeds brilliantly. It’s up-to-the-second contemporary, funny, unexpected, and peppered with terrific dialogue and best of all blatantly honest. Openly Straight is a funny, smart novel about being out, being real, and of all things be yourself can mean. This book is good literature because of the characters, dialogue, and the overall story.
