On a school trip to snowbound Scotland, several students become infected and turn into hungry zombies, leaving a small band of survivors to take refuge in the school bus.

Sixteen-year-old Clare Fern, a member of a family of psychics, helps the mayor and a skeptical detective solve a murder in a Cape Cod town during the height of tourist season--with her brother a prime suspect.

When she drops out of school and struggles to start a career on Broadway in the fall of 1950, seventeen-year-old Kit Corrigan accepts help from an old family friend, a lawyer said to have ties with the mob, who then asks her to do some favors for him.

Book Reviews - October 15, 2012

Eve and Adam

Eve and Adam by Michael Grant

Evening Spiker almost died in a horrible accident. But then Solo rushed her to her mother’s research facility. When she thinks she will die of boredom, her mother tells her to start building a boy.  Using her mother’s sophisticated simulation system, she begins to design Adam. He will be perfect … right?

This short novel has you stumbling across an intriguing story line which touches on genetics and secrets. The fast pace story is entertaining with the many twists and details involved. Solo and Aislin are great characters with their own story line to keep things interesting. If you are reading for a quick read and an ending full of surprises, this is the book for you.

Dark Lord: The Early YearsDark Lord by Jamie Thomson

After an epic battle with his arch nemesis, the Dark Lord finds himself trapped in the Pit of Uttermost Despair, a.k.a. Earth. Now, these ‘adults’ are instant on helping him find his parents.  And they keep calling him Dirk Lloyd.  Is it possible that he is really just a confusing young boy? Or is he the Dark Lord trapped in a human body? Read Dark Lord by Jamie Thomson to find out.

Aimed toward the middle school crowd, yet readable by anyone, this book takes the reader on a ride through the sudden life of the Dark Lord and problems of being a lone child in world full of rules and adults. This book is ideal for readers looking for a book with a hilarious story line full of those awkward moments in a pre-teen’s life.

Through To You
Through to You by Emily Hainsworth

When Viv dies, Camden Pike has no idea what to do with his life.  She was his rock that helped him through the end of his football career, the medication wearing off from the injury, and the changes in his family’s home life. Without her, he does not know what to do.  When he decides to visit the scene of the accidents, he meets Nina, a girl from parallel world where Viv is still alive.  But this Viv is different and Nina has her own secretes. Camden has some serious choices to make before the window between their worlds closes forever.

This surprisingly sci-fi novel has its own set of twist and turns that many readers can relate to.  The main character, Camden, is dealing with death, divorce and changes to his future. Now there is a chance for a change he can choose, something he will decide.  The science fiction behind the novel is actually not a major point, so there is little detail on the subject.  What gets readers the most is not Camden’s inner monologue, but rather the changing world around him.  Through to You is a highly relatable book for readers of all ages with hope and grief all mixed together.

I'll Be There

I’ll Be There by Holly Goldberg Sloan

Sam Border was constantly on the move because of his father.  Never allowed to go to school or connect with anyone in the outside world, Sam knows he has to leave, but he could never leave his little brother, Riddle, behind.  Riddle Border draws all day and will not talk. He knows they have to leave, but where would they go? All things start to change when they meet Emily Bell.  While singing, not so well, a solo at church, Emily sees Sam and knows they are destined for something, because there is no such thing as a coincidence. All their lives are about to change forever and do not forget the snowball effect.

Sloan takes readers on a fairytale with all the emotions experiences of a modern day story.  Starting with an unsettling description of Sam and Riddles early life, readers are captivated by the sudden twists and turns the boys take to achieve their greatest desire, a normal life. Sure to reach a variety of readers, this book is well written, dark at times and colorful in rare moments.
